How to Rank in ChatGPT: 7 Things That Get You Recommended

/insights/how-to-rank-in-chatgpt

There is no page one in ChatGPT. No position three, no scrolling to page two. When someone asks it a question, it either names your business in the answer or it doesn't. When it does, it usually cites the page it took the facts from.

So "how do I rank in ChatGPT" is really two questions. Will it mention you, and will it trust your site enough to cite it?

We measure both for clients. The answers are more practical than the industry makes them sound.

1. Find out which questions you are actually losing

Start by separating two kinds of question.

A branded question includes your name. "What are the hours at [your business]?" A discovery question doesn't. "What's the best option near me for [your category]?"

Across a six-property shopping centre portfolio we measured, the difference was stark. Branded questions returned the client's own website as a cited source. Discovery questions returned none of the six properties at all.

Most businesses that believe they "show up in ChatGPT" have only ever tested their own name. Write down the five questions a buyer would ask before they know you exist. Those are the ones that matter.

2. Publish pages a machine can read without guessing

We asked ChatGPT, with web search on, for the stores and hours at one of those properties. The answer cited the client's own domain directly and used its store directory as the source. We verified that response through an API rather than taking a screenshot on faith.

The directory won because it was easy to lift. Store name, location, hours, in a plain structured list. Nothing to interpret, nothing hidden in an image or a PDF.

That is the pattern. Pages that answer one clear question in plain text get quoted. Pages that make a model work to find the answer get skipped for a source that doesn't. If your markup is part of the problem, we covered the common errors in 7 Structured Data Mistakes That Keep Businesses Out of AI Answers.

3. Make sure Bing can see you

ChatGPT and Copilot both lean on the Bing index. Plenty of businesses have spent years on Google Search Console and never opened Bing Webmaster Tools once.

Verify your site there, submit your sitemap, and check that your important pages are indexed. It takes an afternoon.

It also gives you an early signal. In that same portfolio, Bing organic traffic rose at every property we could measure, by as much as 49.9% at one of them. We explain how to read that signal in 6 Ways to Tell If AI Search Is Already Sending You Customers.

4. Get listed where it looks for comparisons

For discovery questions, assistants prefer sources that compare options over any single company's website. In the portfolio we measured, discovery answers routed through Wikipedia and category directories. None of the six properties had established a presence on either.

Run your discovery questions, note every source the assistant cites, and earn a real listing on the three or four that keep coming up. This is slow work, which is exactly why your competitors probably haven't done it. There is more on this in 6 Reasons Multi-Location Businesses Vanish From AI Search.

5. Make your name impossible to confuse

A model has to decide which business you are before it can recommend you. If your name is shared with other businesses, that decision can go wrong.

We saw one property blended with two same-named centres on other continents in a single answer. Good content could not fix it, because the problem was identity, not quality.

State your full name and your city together on every important page, and link your website, Google Business Profile, and social profiles so they clearly describe one organization. We covered the other causes of this in 5 Reasons AI Gets Your Business Wrong.

6. Write the answer, not the brochure

"Industry-leading solutions for forward-thinking organizations" gives a model nothing to quote. "We serve law firms in Ontario and New York, and most engagements start within two weeks" gives it three facts.

Use headings that match real questions. Put the direct answer in the first sentence under each one. Name prices, locations, timelines, and who you serve. Add an FAQ block to the pages that matter, and keep a visible last-updated date so both people and machines can see the information is current.

7. Check every month, because the answer moves

AI answers change with the model version, the phrasing of the question, and the location of the person asking. A single check is an anecdote. The same five questions asked every month is a trend you can act on.

It is also worth asking new leads how they found you, and listening closely to the answer. In one week, three inbound leads told us they had found EMDigital through ChatGPT. One of them had actually used Perplexity. People now say "ChatGPT" the way they used to say "I Googled it," so none of that shows up neatly in your analytics.

What does not work

Nobody can guarantee a mention. No agency controls what a model says, and any offer to "get you ranked #1 in ChatGPT" is selling something that does not exist. Bulk AI-written pages and keyword stuffing do not help either, because assistants reward clarity and corroboration, not volume.

What works is duller and more reliable. Clear pages, consistent facts, a presence on the sources assistants trust, and a monthly check to see whether it is landing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you actually rank in ChatGPT?

Not in the Google sense, because there are no ranked positions. You can improve how often ChatGPT mentions your business and how often it cites your site, by making your information clear, consistent, and present on the sources it draws from.

Does ranking on Google help you show up in ChatGPT?

It helps indirectly, because the same clear, well-structured pages tend to do well in both. But ChatGPT's web search leans on the Bing index, and a page can rank well on Google while being ignored by AI answers. They need to be checked separately.

How long does it take to start showing up in ChatGPT?

Answers that use live web search can reflect changes within weeks of your pages being recrawled. Answers drawn from a model's training data can take much longer. Plan on a few months of monthly checks before judging the result.

Can anyone guarantee my business will appear in ChatGPT?

No. What an agency can do is fix the causes that keep you out, measure the questions that matter to you every month, and show you whether the answers are moving.
